George Floyd died after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes.

All four officers involved in the incident were fired and Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree homicide. The three other officers were charged with halp and favor, murder. Floyd’s killing came on the heels of two other high-profile cases in 2020. On February 23, 25 year old Ahmaud Arbery was killed while out on a run after being followed by three white men in a pickup truck. And on March 13, 26 year old EMT Breonna Taylor, was shot eight times and killed after police broke down the door to her apartment while a night time executing warrant. On May 26, 2020, the day after Floyd’s shooting, protestors in Minneapolis took to the streets to protest Floyd’s killing. Police cars were set on fire and officers released tear gas to sperate crowds. After months of quarantine and isolation during a global pandemic, protests mounted, expanded across the country in the following days.
Black Lives Matter Movement:
The protests following the death of George Floyd were sparked by the police killing of the unarmed African American George Floyd during a police operation on May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis. The protests are directed against police violence and structural racism and had the motto „Black Lives Matter“. They covered all major cities in the United States and took place worldwide. In the United States, some protests were accompanied by violent unrest, in which numerous shops were damaged, looted and set on fire. As a result of the riots, a curfew was imposed in 40 cities and the national guard was used to support the police in 23 states. During the protests, there were further cases of police violence criticized as disproportionate, including against journalists. Over 20 people died during the protestation. Although the movement has received unprecedented attention from the incident, it has its origins in 2013.
Activists Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi founded the movement in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who had previously killed the unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin killed on a vigilante patrol. The name of the movement was derived from the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter, which was widespread at the time. Since then, Black Lives Matter has called for regular protests, for example after the violent deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson and Eric Garner in New York. Racism has been a recurring theme in the United States in the form of police violence, but also through structural discrimination against blacks. In Germany, too, racist crimes and structural inequality such as racial profiling or police violence occur again and again.
